Texas holdem is the most popular variation of poker playedonline and in casinos and poker rooms everywhere in the world. Its popularity has led to many different variations, both incasinos and in home and private games.
The first three sections below include information aboutlimits that Texas holdem and its variants can be played in. Anyof the variants listed in the sections after the next three canbe played in any of the three limits.
*Fixed-Limit Hold’em Betting Rules The second most popular form of Texas Hold’em is Limit Holdem. Whereas No-Limit is a game of brute force where players play big stacks and run up huge bluffs, Fixed Limit Hold’em is a more subtle, gentleman’s game where players look to exploit small edges: a game of finesse and well-timed aggression.
*No Limit Texas Hold’em The No Limit part of No Limit Texas Hold’em is referring to the fact players can raise or bet all of their chips at any time during a session. Basically if you have $100 in front of you and you like what you see in your hand (and in any Community Cards) you can push all of your chips into the pot.
*In a limit game you are only allowed to bet (or raise) the amount specified by the limit each time the action comes to you. Taking our example of a $4/$8 Hold’em game, before the flop you can either bet $4 or raise another $4 to $8 total. The next player then has the option of matching your bet or raising a further $4 etc.
That poses the question of how much? In this case, we will raise to 3x the BB, so $3 and one player calls our bet as shown. We will cover the reason we use 3x later in the article. Three times the BB is a standard raise size which we will go into later in this article under the heading “Texas Holdem betting strategy”.
The game variants listed in the sections after the limitsections have varying degrees of popularity. Omaha holdem can befound in many poker rooms and casinos and is widely availableonline. Pineapple can be found in a limited number of pokerrooms, and most of the others are only found in private and homegames at this time.Limit
A limit betting structure is commonly found in use for Texasholdem games, but it isn’t as popular as no limit play. In limitplay each betting round has a set betting limit. This limit isusually one amount during the flop and immediately following theflop and twice this amount on the turn and river betting rounds.Example
A limit Texas holdem game with a 4 / 8 limit has bets of $4during the first two betting rounds and exactly $8 during thefinal two betting rounds. So each bet and / or raise is exactly$4 before and on the flop. If player 1 bets $4 and player 2raises she must put $8 in the pot, $4 to call the original betand a raise of another $4.
Blinds are usually set based on the limits, with the bigblind being equal to the lower betting limit and the small blindbeing half the big blind. In the example we just looked at thebig blind would be $4 and the small blind is $2.No Limit
No limit play has the same blind structure found in limitgames and usually has a minimum bet limit per round, but at anytime a player, when it’s their turn to act, may bet up to andincluding the total number of chips they have in front of them. This is the most common betting structure found in Texas holdemgames and also most of the variations listed below except forOmaha holdem.
One of the common misconceptions of non-poker players andbeginners is if a player has more money than another and moves all of their chips into the pot that the player with fewer chipscan’t play or loses automatically. What actually happens is theplayer with more chips gets back their chips in excess of theother player’s total amount.Texas Holdem Limit Betting Rules How To PlayExample
I player A has $250 and moves all in and player B has $200and calls, player A receives $50 back so each player has $200 inthe pot.
This can get somewhat complicated if multiple players are ina pot with differing chip stacks. When multiple players get allin with different stack sizes the dealer creates different potswith the main pot being the total amount of the player with thesmallest stack which anyone remaining in the hand can win.
The first side pot will be bets in excess of the amount thesmallest stack held, with only players who contribute to thesecond pot eligible to win it. A third, fourth, and so on, sidepot can be built in large multi way pots. You don’t have toworry about this as the dealer takes care of it, but it’s goodto understand how it works to make sure the dealer doesn’t makeany mistakes.Example
A pot ends up with four players all in, and the hand startswith the following chip counts:
*Player A has $700 in chips
*Player B has $800 in chips
*Player C has $900 in chips
*Player D has $1,000 in chips
The main pot ends up with $2,800 in it and any of the fourplayers can win it. The first side pot has $300 in it andplayers B, C, and D can each win it. The second side pot ends upwith $200 in it and only players C and D can win it. Notice thatplayer D will only have $900 invested because she started withat least $100 more money than any of the other players.
At the showdown the player who’s eligible for each pot withthe highest hand is awarded that pot. Different players can wineach pot or the same player can win all of the pots. Thisexample ignores the small amount of the blinds and rake thatoften make a pot not come out quite so evenly for instructionalpurposes.Pot Limit
Pot limit is mostly found in Omaha games, but a few Texasholdem games are played in a pot limit format. One of the issueswith pot limit play is the dealer has to understand how thebetting structure works and be able to quickly determine the potsize. When playing online the software platform takes care ofall of the calculations, but in live play the dealer needs to beeither experienced, or quite sharp, or both.
The blinds and minimum bets on each round are set by thehouse, just like in limit and no limit play, but the maximumamount any player may bet at one time is the amount of money inthe pot. But the amount of the pot also includes the amount ittakes to call an earlier bet, so a pot sized bet can be biggerthan most players think. Look at the two following examples fora better understanding of how pot sized bets work.Example #1
The pot has $125 in it after the flop and thefirst player wants to raise the size of the pot. She bets $125and play continues to the next player. This is fairlystraightforward and easy, because the player is starting thebetting round.Example #2
Using the previous example as a setup, the nextplayer to act wants to raise as much as possible. The pot nowhas $250 in it, but the maximum raise is actually higher than$250. Though the player must state their intention to raise, thepot size is calculated by first adding the call of $125 to thepot and then determining the maximum raise amount. So once the$125 call is added the pot now has $375 in it, so the player canraise another $375. So they put a total of $500 in the pot, which is the $125 call and the $375 raise.
This is why the dealer needs to understand how pot limit playworks and stay on top of the game.
In real life pot limit games it’s rarely this complicated andmost poker rooms let players operate with bet maximums close tothe pot size. If the pot has anywhere between $90 and $110 orsomewhere close to this range a player can bet $100. As long asplayers are close to the pot size with their maximum bets it’susually acceptable for all of the players. This way the dealerdoesn’t have to keep an exact count on the pot.
Occasionally you’ll play against a player who can keep therunning pot amount in his or her head and announce it wheneveranyone needs to know. This can be a bit intimidating, but mostof these players aren’t any more than decent poker players. Justbecause you can keep track of a pot doesn’t mean you’re a greatpoker player.Pineapple
Pineapple poker is played exactly like Texas holdem exceptyou start with three hole cards instead of two. You discard onecard face down before the flop. Traditionally you discard yourthird card after the pre flop betting round, but in some placesyou discard it before the pre flop betting round. It doesn’treally matter which way you play, as long as you stayconsistent.
Most Pineapple games are played as no limit, but it caneasily be played in limit and pot limit. In comparison to Texasholdem, Pineapple hand values run a little higher, but notextremely so. Three of a kind hands and flushes are more likelyto happen in Pineapple because it’s easier to start with apocket pair and it’s more likely to have two cards of the samesuit.
Overall, if you can beat Texas holdem you should be able toquickly adjust your game to be a winning Pineapple player. Thesame concepts of tight and aggressive play tend to do well inPineapple, just like in Texas holdem. Poor players tend to playtoo many hands in Pineapple because they have a third startingcard, making it look like they have a better hand than theyreally do.Crazy Pineapple
Crazy Pineapple starts the same way as regular Pineapple, butyou don’t discard your third hole card until after the bettinground following the flop. This tends to make players stay in thehand longer, leading to larger average pots than in a similarTexas holdem game. It’s usually played in no limit format.
The average winning hand strength is better than in a Texasholdem game because of the extra starting card and thepossibility to see six total cards before the turn and river.Just like regular Pineapple, if you’re a good holdem player youshouldn’t have much trouble adjusting your game to be a winningCrazy Pineapple player.Omaha Holdem
Omaha holdem, often just called Omaha, is the second mostpopular form of poker played online and in poker rooms aroundthe world. The main differences between Texas holdem and Omahaare each player receives four hole cards instead of two, andeach player must use exactly two of their hole cards and threecommunity cards to make a hand.
Omaha is sometimes played as high only, like Texas holdem, but it’s also played in high / low, usually with an eight highqualifier. Though 7 Card Stud can be played high / low, Omaha isabout the only game found at this time that is played for low.Razz is a low only game, but finding a game is almostimpossible.
In a high / low Omaha game the pot is split between the besthigh hand and the best low hand if a qualifying low hand isshown down. A qualifying low hand must have five unpaired cardsranked eight or below. See our Omaha poker section for acomplete explanation of the rules.
From a strategy standpoint if you’re starting to play Omahaand have been playing Texas holdem, the most important thing toremember is just because you have twice as many hole cards itdoesn’t mean you can play twice as many hands. You shouldactually play no more hands than a winning Texas holdem playerdoes, and many good Omaha players play fewer hands.
The other important thing that trips up many beginning Omahaplayers is never forget you have to use two of your hole cards.
You can’t use more or less than three community cards. Thiscan lead to costly mistakes if you forget it.
Omaha, in both high only and high / low, can be played in nolimit, pot limit, or limit, but most games are limit and potlimit.Aviation Holdem
Aviation holdem is a cross between Omaha and Pineapple. Youstart with four hole cards and discard one before the flop andanother one after the flop. This form of holdem is rare and mostplayers aren’t familiar with it. The odds of it passing Omaha inpopularity aren’t good because it’s almost exactly like Omahahigh only, but in Omaha you keep all four cards for the entirehand.
The value of winning hands at showdown is almost identical toOmaha high only, which means better than the average Texasholdem hand, but not outrageously better. Winning Texas holdemplayers and wining Omaha payers won’t have much troubleadjusting to Aviation holdem winning play.Tahoe Holdem or Lazy Pineapple
Tahoe holdem, also called Lazy Pineapple in some places, haseach player receive three hole cards and keep them throughoutthe hand. It’s a cross between Texas holdem and Omaha. Otherthan three hole cards it plays exactly like Texas holdem.
This variation can be played in a high / low split versionlike Omaha high / low, but it’s rarely played this way. Theaverage winning hand value is slightly better than Texas holdem, but not extremely better.Speed Holdem
Of all of the variations listed on this page Speed holdem isprobably the rarest and is only found in home or private games. In Speed holdem each player is dealt four hole cards and eachplayer immediately discards two of them. Then all five communitycards are dealt face up in the center of the table. This isfollowed by the single betting round and showdown.
All other rules are the same as a normal Texas holdem gameand Speed holdem can be played in limit, pot limit, and no limitvarieties, but it’s almost always played in no limit.Summary
It’s easy to get bored playing regular Texas holdem, whichleads to all kinds of problems. When you get bored you may playtoo many hands, let your mind wander so you miss important partsof the game, and just play worse than normal overall.Texas Holdem No Limit Betting Rules
Now you know how to play many of the popular variations ofTexas holdem, so the next time you start getting bored or justwant a change, look for one of the variations listed above. Orget some friends together and start your own game of Pineappleor Tahoe holdem.Fundamentals of Poker - Limit Texas HoldemMason MalmuthTwo Plus Two Magazine, Vol. 8, No. 12

In Texas hold ’em, a small flat disk, called a “button,” is used to indicate the dealer position. Prior to the cards being dealt, the first player to the left of the dealer position posts a small blind, and the second player to the dealer’s left puts up a big blind, which usually is equal to the first-round bet. Blinds are “live” bets, which signifies two things. First, a blind is a “real” bet, and to enter the pot, a player in a blind position needs only to make up the difference, if any, between his blind and the current bet. Second, players in the blinds have the option of raising when the action gets back to them even if there has been no prior raise. When each hand is completed, the dealer button is moved one position to the left, and the procedure of posting blinds is repeated, so everyone pays his fair share.
To start the hand, each player, beginning with the small blind, receives two cards dealt face down one at a time. Action is initiated on the first betting round by the player to the immediate left of the big blind, who has the options of discarding his hand, calling the big blind, or raising an equivalent amount. The action moves clockwise in this manner until all players have exercised their options and all bets have been called. On all subsequent betting rounds, the first active player to the left of the dealer button starts the action.
After the first round of betting is completed, three cards — referred to as “the flop” — are turned face up simultaneously in the center of the table, and another round of betting occurs. The next two board cards — specified as either fourth street and fifth street or the turn card and the river card — are then dealt face up one at a time in the center of the table, with a betting round after each card. As noted previously, these board cards are community cards and are shared by all active players in the hand.
At the showdown, the player who makes the best five-card poker hand, using any combination of the five cards on board and the two cards in his hand, wins the pot. In Texas hold ’em, more than one player often will have the best hand. When this happens, the pot is split.
Fixed-limit hold ’em games have a two-tiered betting structure, with the lower limit used in the first two betting rounds and the higher limit (which is usually double the lower limit) used in the final two rounds of betting. As an example, suppose you are playing in a $3-$6 hold ’em game. The first player to the left of the dealer position will put in a $1 small blind, and the second player to the dealer’s left will post a $3 big blind. On the first round of betting, the player to the immediate left of the big blind will have the options of discarding his hand, calling the $3 big blind, or raising $3, for a total bet of $6. Subsequent bets and raises both before the flop and on the flop will be in $3 increments. All bets and raises on fourth and fifth streets must be in $6 increments.
Many low-stakes Texas hold ’em games are also played with spread limits which means that any player has the option of betting or raising an amount that is not fixed. For instance, in a typical $1-$4-$8 spread-limit hold ’em game, there will be either two $1 blinds or one $2 blind. The first player to the left of the blind(s) can fold, call the blind, or raise any amount from $1 to $4. Subsequent bets and raises on the first three betting rounds can be from $1 to $4 at the player’s discretion. Bets and raises on the final round of betting can be any amount from $1 to $8.
Many cardrooms throughout the country award jackpots in Texas hold ’em games as well as in seven-card stud games. The procedure used for seeding the jackpot pool and the tips for playing in a hold ’em game that offers a jackpot are the same as those given previously in the section on seven-card stud.Poker Strategy and Other Topics - November 2019I Got Postled, Allegedlyby Carlos WelchDon’t be Like Mike: Poker and the Art of Lyingby Robert SamuelsStarting Hand Selection in Omaha Eight or Better, Part 7: Queens and Lesser Pairsby Kevin HaneyPower Ratings for Two Card Draws in Deuce to Seven Triple Draw Lowballby Kevin HaneyPoker Faces in the Crowd: Michael Groetschby Ben SaxtonTexas Holdem No Limit Betting RulesStatus of Las Vegas Poker, Autumn, 2019by Bryan ClarkIt’s Good to be the CEOby Felipe Garcia, CFA and Aaron Byrd, CFATexas Holdem Limit Betting Rules PokerHitting the Destination on the Road to Zeroby Nick WillettTexas Holdem Limit Betting Rules Card GameClassic Article: Fundamentals of Poker - Introductionby Mason Malmuth
